Iona WSOC Falls in Second Half Battle at Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, NJ— The Iona women's soccer team battled in the second half on Saturday afternoon, but fell to Saint Peter's, 3-2. Facing a two goal deficit out of the break, the Maroon & Gold tallied two goals in the 63rd minute but the Peacocks pulled out in front with a penalty kick goal in the 65th minute for the win at Jaroschak Field.

The Gaels scored both second half goals in a span of just 34 seconds as graduate students Samantha Hogan and Sofia Giamanco recorded their first goals of the season. Junior Sofia Banegas tallied her first assist of the year on the Gaels second goal.

THE RUNDOWN

The Peacocks broke the game open with a goal in the 12th minute, as the rainy conditions impeded a successful Iona clear with Joana Dias firing the ball just inside the 18-yard box for the 1-0 advantage. Saint Peter's added to its lead in the 28th minute on a goal by Gianna Grassifulli.

After being out shot 8-3 in the opening half, Iona opened the second half with a pair of chances on goal by freshman Camille Daniel and Hogan in the 48th minute that were saved by Annabelle Adams. The Gaels finally broke through in the 63rd minute as Hogan fired in a rebound shot that was saved by the Peacocks defense. She followed up her shot and knocked in a failed clearance just past the goal line to get the Gaels on the scoreboard.

Iona maintained pressure after that as Banegas found a charging Giamanco in stride, after two dribbles Giamanco fired home the shot past the diving keeper to level the score 2-2.

The Peacocks found an opportunity in the Gaels zone just two minutes later with Grassifulli driving inside the 18-yard box and drawing a foul against the Iona defense 12-yards out from the net. That set up the penalty kick chance for Dias, who slotted the ball on the left side for the 3-2 advantage.

Looking to tie the game back up, Iona took six shots over the final 25 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net.

The Gaels out shot the Peacocks, 16-10 for the game including 13 shots in the second half. Giamanco led the way with four shots while Hogan and senior Emily Drake tallied three shots. Freshman Savannah Rogers recorded three saves in goal for the Gaels.

The Maroon & Gold return to Mazzella Field on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. matchup against Marist.
