New Rochelle, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team battled Marist to a 1-1 draw on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Graduate student
Sofia Giamanco scored for the second straight game with the Maroon & Gold's goal in the 50
th minute.
The first half saw balanced efforts from both teams with the Red Foxes garnering a 10-5 edge in shots. The Gaels had a scoring chance in the 34
th minute as junior
Myla Rodrigues sent a long through ball deep into the Marist zone, drawing goalkeeper Maddy Catalanotti off her line. The ball bounced off the side of a defender's leg right to freshman
Lauren Sonski who sent the shot in on goal but was cleared out by the helping defense.
Iona broke open the scoring in the 50
th minute as a free kick ball by freshman
Marissa Graziano near midfield was sent into the Marist box. Senior forward
Kate McNally collected the ball to find a wide-open Giamanco to fire one into the back of the net from 10-yards out.
Marist went on the offensive after the Iona goal, with four shots and three corner kicks. The opposing team netted the equalizer in the 65
th minute as Brooke Cergol buried the pass from Amanda Caldarelli to tie the contest at one apiece.
The Gaels took three shots in the final 25 minutes of the contest to try and regain the lead but were unable to find the back of the net and settle for a 1-1 draw.
Marist held an 18-9 shot advantage over the Gaels, with 10 shots coming in the first half. Graduate
Samantha Hogan, Giamanco and Sonski tied in shots for the Gaels with two apiece, with the latter two recording one on target each.
Freshman goalkeeper
Savannah Rogers played the entire contest and made five saves for the Maroon & Gold. Her counterpart Catalanotti, stopped two.
The Gaels host Fairfield at Mazzella Field this Saturday (October 21) at 1 p.m. on Senior Day. The Maroon & Gold will then travel to Siena on Wednesday (October 25) for the regular season finale, a 3 p.m. kick off on ESPN+.
