Both Men and Women Swimming & Diving Earn Wins On Homecoming

Before a capacity Homecoming Day crowd at the Hynes Athletics Center Pool, the Iona Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving teams each came from behind in the last race to grab wins today in a Tri-Meet with Wagner College and Sacred Heart University.

The Iona women's quartet of Megan Josephs, Ela Goucher, Elisa Vaher and Ashley Benkert jumped out to an early lead to win by 1.94 seconds in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay over Sacred Heart at 3:37.54 by a final score of 123-114.

The Iona men's team of Michael Faughnan, Kieran Egan, Liam Pyatt and Nate Wales posted the team's best regular season time in school history at 3:06.87 in the 400-Free Relay to grab the win from Wagner, who was 3.6 seconds behind, with a final score of 114-109.

"To have two meets go down to the final two races of the day, is very exciting for the team and crowd," commented Coach Nick Cavataro, in his 43rd season. "I don't know if we ever had that here. You really find out a lot about your team's determination and desire in pressure race situations like this and they all responded to a high level."

Individually the Iona women, despite falling to a powerful Wagner women's team (128-77) picked up their first win of the season with individual wins from Junior Ashley Benkert in the 200-yard Butterfly at 2:12.26. Graduate student Tristan Urso took the 1000-yard Freestyle at 10:49.70.

On the men's side Senior Michael Faughnan took two wins in back-to-back races, taking the 1000-yard Freestyle at 9:47.47 and the 200-yard Freestyle at 1:39.77. Sophomore diver, Dylan Riccio took both the 1 and 3-Meter Springboard events with respective totals of 178.20 and 222.90. Freshman Kieran Egan claimed a win in the 200-Backstroke at 1:53.24.

Iona takes to the road next Friday for the first time this season as they face Long Island University in Brooklyn.
