LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona University volleyball team snapped a three-game skid in a four-set win at Siena in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the UHY Center. Sophomore
Mackenzie Wiggins led the Maroon & Gold with a 20-kill effort in the win.
SET 1 (IONA 25, SIENA 18)
Down 13-12, Iona scored five straight points to open a 17-13 advantage it would not relinquish. Wiggins had six kills and senior
Hope Matschner posted nine digs to lead the Gaels.
SET 2 (SIENA 25, IONA 16)
The Saints opened an eight point advantage at 16-8 with a 5-0 run and led by as many as 10 in the second set to even the match at 1-1. Wiggins added another four kills.
SET 3 (IONA 25, SIENA 19)
Iona rebounded with four straight points to start the third but saw the lead evaporate while as Siena took an 8-7 lead. With the score tied at 9-9, Iona went on a 5-0 run to build a cushion. The Saints closed within two at 19-17 before the Maroon & Gold closed it out with six of the final eight points. Wiggins was 7-for-9 on attack attempts in the set and Matschner posted eight digs in the frame.
SET 4 (IONA 25, SIENA 13)
The Gaels never trailed and pulled away following the second tie of the frame at 5-5. A 10-2 run to end the set led to the match win. Senior
Morgan Madasz had four kills and Matschner added another nine digs.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Wiggins had 20 kills on 40 swings with four errors, hitting .400 for the match. She had three blocks to run her point total to a match-best 21.5 and added three digs.
- Madasz was Iona's no. 2 scorer with 11 points, posting a season-high nine kills and four blocks. She also posted a career-high 11 digs in the win.
- Senior Jen Soto had six kills and five blocks.
- Graduate setter Samantha Juran split time at setter and posted 19 assists and two digs in two sets played.
- Matschner had 30 digs and was 11-for-11 on service receptions.
THE OPPONENT
- Anny Montano had 12 kills to lead the Saints.
- Claire Isaksen had 17 assists.
- Payton Hinkle posted 16 digs.
UP NEXT
The Gaels are back in action on Wednesday evening when they take on Fairfield at 7 p.m.
