Iona WBB Drops Non-Conference Finale to Stony Brook

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University women's basketball team dropped its non-conference finale to Stony Brook, 71-49 on Thursday afternoon. The Gaels held a 38-32 lead at halftime but were stymied by a strong second half from the opposing Seawolves at the Hynes Center.
 
The Maroon & Gold cap the 2023 portion of schedule and non-conference play with a 5-5 overall record. Junior Judith Gomez recorded her second straight double-double, finishing with a team-high 13 points and 11 rebounds. She added four assists and steals. Sophomore Petra Oborilova connected on four three pointers for 12 points. Sophomore Noa Givon added 10 points and five rebounds.

THE RUNDOWN

The game was gridlocked for the first four minutes and change with both teams trading baskets to a 6-6 standstill. Iona broke the game open with an 8-0 run on layups from four different scorers to take a 14-6 lead with 2:48 to go in the frame. The Seawolves closed the quarter with a 9-4 swing to bring the score to 18-15 after 10 minutes of play.
 
A three pointer by Oborilova kicked off the second quarter for Iona. Stony Brook responded with a pair of baskets to cut the deficit to two at 21-19 with 5:57 to go. Both teams scored in a flurry during next 2:22, combining for 18 points in that span. Iona held a 10-8 edge led by five points from Gomez during that stretch to hold a 31-27 lead. The Seawolves put together a 5-0 run to make it a one-point game, 33-32 with 1:50 left in the first half. Iona closed out the half strong with another three-pointer by Oborilova and two free-throws from Givon in the closing minute to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.
 
Stony Brook opened the third quarter with four quick points before a three from Oborilova stopped the run. The Seawolves punched back with another pair of buckets before graduate student Natalia Otkhmezuri drained a three from the top of the key. That gave the Gaels a 44-40 lead with 7:09 remaining in the quarter. Stony Brook took over for the remainder of the quarter, forcing five Iona turnovers and zero made field goals while stringing together a 12-0 closing stretch to take a 52-44 lead.
 
The Seawolves gained full grasp of the game with a 12-3 run to begin the fourth quarter. Iona looked to cut into the Stony Brook lead as Gomez broke up the run with a floating layup with 5:21 to go. A 10-1 closing stretch from Stony Brook sealed the Thursday matinee, 71-49.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Gomez posted her second straight double-double and finished in double figures scoring for the fourth time this season. She shot 6-of-11 from the field with one three-pointer to tie her career-high with 13 points. Her 11 rebounds set a new career high. She added four assists and three steals.
  • Oborilova tallied double-digit points for the fourth time this season with her 12 points on four made three-pointers. She has connected on three or more three-pointers in four games this season.
  • Givon also posted double-figures for the fourth time this season, finishing the game with 10 points.
  • Junior Ella Fajardo also dished out four assists for the Gaels.
  • Sophomore Ally Carman tied her career-high for a third time with a team best two blocked shots.

THE OPPONENT

  • Gigi Gonzalez recorded a game-high 19 points to go with a game-high seven assists and four rebounds.
  • Sherese Pittman registered 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, a team-high six rebounds and a game-high two blocks.
  • Victoria Keenan added 13 points with 4-of-8 shooting from distance and three steals.  

TEAM STATS

  • Stony Brook shot 43.8% for the game while Iona shot 36.4% from the field.
  • The Seawolves went 53.3% shooting from the floor in the final two quarters, the Gaels were held to just 15.4% shooting from the field in the second half.
  • Iona held the advantage on the glass, 38-32 for the game.
  • The Gaels committed 22 turnovers while Stony Brook committed eight turnovers. The Seawolves converted 18 points off turnovers.

UP NEXT

The Gaels will take a two-week break for the holidays before returning in the new year. Iona will return to action on Thursday, January 4 with a trip to Rider for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Alumni Gym.
