Iona WBB Survives Late Push to Beat Hofstra, 59-54

HEMPSTEAD, NY – The Iona University women's basketball team held off a late comeback attempt by Hofstra Thursday night, beating them on the road 59-54 at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Maroon & Gold closed out the road portion of 2023-24 non-conference schedule with their third straight victory, improving to 4-3 on the season.
 
Graduate student Sierra DeAngelo posted an all-around effort for the Gaels, playing all 40 minutes. DeAngelo finished with a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists. Sophomore Petra Oborilova posted 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field. Graduate student Natalia Otkhmezuri recorded all 11 of her points in the second half for the Maroon & Gold.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona started the contest going 4-of-6 from the floor to take a 9-6 advantage just before the media timeout at 5:11 to go in the quarter. Oborilova paced the Gaels offense with five points early. Hofstra used a 5-0 run to take a 11-9 lead with 2:39 to go in the period. The Gaels responded with a closing 5-0 run on a layup by sophomore Noa Givon and three-pointer from junior Ella Fajardo to take a 14-11 lead after one quarter of play.
 
Momentum carried over into the second quarter for the Gaels with a 7-0 run started by a triple from Oborilova. Freshman Zoey Ward added back-to-back baskets to give Iona the 21-11 lead at the 7:01 mark. Hofstra punched back with an 8-0 run courtesy of Emma Von Essen to cut the lead to two, 21-19 with 3:40 to go. The Gaels dished out the final blow in the opening half with an 8-0 closing stretch of their own led by six points from DeAngelo to take 29-19 lead into halftime.
 
DeAngelo picked up right where she left off scoring Iona's first five points of the third quarter to push the lead to 34-22 with 8:24 remaining in the period. Both teams continued to trade baskets as the quarter wore on with Iona holding a 14-13 edge on scoring to take a 48-35 lead. Iona connected on five three-pointers in the third quarter as Oborilova and Otkhmezuri knocked down two each in the period.
 
Another triple by Otkhmezuri kicked off the fourth quarter to give Iona it's largest lead of the contest, 51-35 with 9:23 to play. After both teams exchanged baskets, Hofstra went on their longest scoring run of the game, a 10-0 favor. That cut the deficit to six, 53-47 with 4:53 to go. DeAngelo broke up the run for Iona with a floater in the paint. The Pride utilized the press to put together a 7-2 run with a Von Essen three making it a one-score game, 57-54 with 1:12 to go. An Iona turnover with 33 second to go gave Hofstra a chance to tie the game but junior Judith Gomez provided lockdown defense blocking the game tying three-point attempt with five seconds remaining. Otkhmezuri knocked down a pair of free throws with three seconds left to seal the 59-54 victory.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • DeAngelo finished in double figures for the fifth time this season with her 19 points on 8-of-17 shooting.
  • The Pittsburgh, Pa. native grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and tied her career-high with five assists.
  • Oborilova had an efficient shooting night, going 5-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-5 from distance. Thursday night was the second time this season posting double figures with 14 points.
  • Otkhmezuri had a big second half for the Gaels scoring all 11 of her points in the final two quarters. The graduate guard has scored double-digits in five games this season.
  • Defensively, Fajardo led Iona with two steals. Gomez recorded the lone block on the night for the Gaels.

THE OPPONENT

  • Zyheima Swint posted a double-double for the Pride, finishing with 14 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
  • Emma Von Essen also finished in double figures with 11 points.
  • Brooke Anya finished with a near double-double, recording nine points and eight rebounds. Ally Knights recorded a team-high five assists.

TEAM STATS

  • Iona out shot Hofstra 44.2% to 38.5% from the field.
  • Both teams were near even from beyond the arc as Iona shot 39.1% with nine made three-pointers and Hofstra shot 38.9% with seven made triples.
  • The Pride commanded the glass on their home floor with a 39-25 rebounding advantage.
  • Iona's defense forced 18 Hofstra turnovers and only committed 13 turnovers for the game.  

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Iona capped its five-game road swing with three straight victories, concluding the road portion of the 2023-24 non-conference schedule.
  • The Gaels improve to 11-9 in the all-time against Hofstra in the local series that dates to 1978.

UP NEXT

After 28 days on the road, Iona returns to the Hynes Athletic Center on Sunday, November 10 against Sacred Heart. The match-up will tip-off at noon to kick off a doubleheader in New Rochelle with the men's team tipping-off at 5:00 p.m. against Saint Francis (Pa.).
