Iona Women's Lacrosse Opens Season with Win Over La Salle

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse hosted its season opener earlier this afternoon, defeating La Salle, 11-8. Despite a late push by the Explorers the Gaels held on for the victory.

GAME SUMMARY

Senior Amber Brewster opened the scoring quickly as she found the back of the net less than two minutes into the game. Less than a minute later Brewster scored another giving the Gaels an early 2-0 lead. La Salle bounced back from the slow start and knotted things up at 2-2 with 7:42 left in the opening quarter. Two goals from sophomore Kira Varada and one goal from Sophomore Laine Walterson over the closing minutes gave Iona a three goal lead entering the second quarter.

The second quarter saw very little action with only one goal scored by the opposition the entire 15 minutes. Gaels held a two goal lead entering halftime. Both offenses made adjustments at halftime combining for seven total goals in the third. Micaela FitzPatrick notched her first two goals of the season with Varada getting her hat trick in the first four minutes giving Iona an 8-3 lead.

Over the last nine minutes of the third the Maroon & Gold were outscored 3-1, lone goal coming from Senior Emily Stewart, and it trimmed the Iona lead to three entering the final quarter. La Salled opened the scoring in the final 15 minutes with two goals trimming the Iona lead to just one with over ten minutes left to play.  Brewster notched her hat trick for some insurance and then Varada found the back of the net with 2:52 left sealing the victory as Sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Votto kept the Explorers off the board for the last ten minutes.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Varada led the team in goals, shots, draw controls, ground balls, & caused turnovers.
  • Sofia Votto recorded nine saves in the win.
  • Walterson's goal was her first collegiate goal.
  • Freshman Victoria Curreri notched five ground balls in her collegiate debut.
  • Votto is now in the top five for wins in Iona history.
