Iona Lacrosse Defeats LIU in Thrilling 2OT Win

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse went wire to wire with the LIU sharks finishing a double overtime win in the dark, with Senior Amber Brewster netting the game winner, while recording her second straight hat trick.

GAME SUMMARY

Sharks came out hot to start the game with four straight goals giving Iona an early deficit to overcome. Varada got the Gaels on the board at the 8:22 mark in the first quarter, which would be the last goal of the opening quarter for both teams. LIU opened the scoring in the second quarter extending their lead back to four. Goals from Senior Emily Stewart, Sophomore Kira Varada, and Junior Alexa Maggiacomo in a three minute span closed the Shark lead to just two.

LIU responded back with a goal of their own making it a 7-4 game with 5:53 left in the first half. Over those final six minutes the Maroon & Gold went on a 4-0 run giving them a one goal lead, 8-7 entering halftime. Iona's offense stayed hot coming out of the break scoring three goals extending their lead to four. Maggiacomo adde her second of the day and Micaela FitzPatrick netted two goals of her own.

LIU didn't go away as they went on their own four goal run to close out the third quarter, knotting things up at 11-11. First seven minutes of the fourth quarter were all defense, until the Sharks snuck one past sophomore goalkeeper Sofia Votto, giving the sharks a one goal advantage. Amber Brewster took over for the Gaels offense tying things back up at 12-12 with 7:45 left to play. A minute and 40 seconds later Brewster found the back of the net again giving the Gaels the lead. Chance after chance the Sharks couldn't buy a goal until Lluna Katz of LIU sent the game into OT with 37 seconds left on the clock.

The opening three minute sudden death period saw little action with a lone shot by LIU that was saved by Votto with four seconds left. With a big draw control from Kate Kruger to start the second overtime period Amber Brewster buried the game winner just 24 seconds into the period.
