Iona Women's Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of the Season

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Big second and third quarters from Boston University prove to be the difference as the Iona women's lacrosse program suffered their first loss of the season, 14-9. Between the two quarters the Gaels were outscored 11-2.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona started things off strong, keeping the Terriers off the board and jumping out to a 2-0 lead off goals from Kira Varada and Micaela FitzPatrick. Boston finally got on the board six minutes in and were able to tie things up at 2-2 four minutes later. Senior Amber Brewster gave the lead back to the Maroon & Gold right before the start of the second quarter.

Boston University's offense fired on all cylinders in the second quarter, quickly erasing the Iona lead and jumping out to a four goal lead. Emily Stewart found the back of the net for the Maroon & Gold's last goal of the first half. The visitors regained a four goal lead entering the second half.

Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney saw her first action to start the second half as she replaced sophomore keeper Sofia Votto. A goalie change did not stop the offense of Boston, they started the second half with two goals making it a six goal game. Stewart once again scored the only goal of the period for the Maroon & Gold, before Boston extended their lead to a commanding eight goals entering the final 15 minutes.

Iona's offense and defense picked up in the final frame, outscoring the opposition 4-1. Both Kate Krueger and Alexa Skoubas notched their first goals of the season. Stewart recorded a hat trick and FitzPatrick found her second, but the Gaels ran out of time and the comeback came up short.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Krueger recorded her first collegiate goal today.
  • Votto and Sweeney combined for 16 saves, making eight each.
  • From 14:05 in the second - 10:07 in the fourth the Gaels were out scored 12-2.
