EMMITSBURG, MD - The Iona University women's basketball team defeated Mount St. Mary's, 50-37, on Saturday afternoon at Knott Arena. A trio of double-digit scorers for Iona, highlighted by
Ketsia Athias' second straight double-double, helped the Gaels grab their 14th consecutive victory.
THE RUNDOWN
It was a slow start at Knott Arena, though Iona held its own and maintained a lead for 13 of a possible 20 minutes of first-half action. The Mount made the first shot of the afternoon but proceeded to miss their next 12, falling behind by eight points a trifecta ended an 11-plus minute scoring drought. The Maroon & Gold were responsible for nine of the final 13 points in the first half, taking a 23-13 lead into the locker room.
Despite an uncharacteristically poor shooting effort offensively, Iona controlled the contest throughout thanks to a defensive effort that stood up to its typical standards. The Mount made just five total shots in the first half and were limited to single-digit scoring outputs in both frames. The second half was much of the same for the Mountaineers, who shot just 8-of-28 in the second half.Â
IONA PERFORMERS
- Juana Camilion scored a team-high 14 points. It was her 80th career game with at least 10 points and the 15th time this season that she has been Iona's high scorer in the contest.
- Ketsia Athias registered her second straight double-double, posting 12 points and 11 rebounds. It was her fifth double-digit rebounding effort of the season.
- Thoranna Hodge-Carr contributed 10 points, shooting an efficient 4-of-6 from the field. As a team, Iona is now 8-0 this season when Hodge-Carr scores in double figures.
- Kate Mager was held scoreless for the second time this season, missing all four shot attempts and finishing without a three-point field goal made for just the third time in 25 games played. She still managed to post season-high totals in rebounds (7) and assists (4) however.
THE OPPONENT
- Michaela Harrison, second only to Mager in the MAAC in three-pointers, also struggled to find her groove. She missed her first 10 attempts from beyond the arc, finishing 1-11 from three-point range. Despite those struggles, she still led the team with 13 points.
- Jessica Tomasetti joined Harrison as the Mount's other double-digit point scorer, finishing with 12 points.
- Isabella Hunt corralled a team-high nine rebounds.
TEAM STATS
- The Mount's 37 points matched a season-low for an Iona opponent. The Gaels improved to 42-0 all-time when an opponent scores under 40 points.
- Iona recorded a season-high 42 rebounds, the second time this season that the Maroon & Gold have grabbed at least 40 boards in a game (both against Mount St. Mary's). The Gaels' 42 rebounds are the most since securing 46 against Marist last season.
- On the heels of one of the greatest shooting performances in the history of college basketball, Iona shot 37.0% from the floor today, its second-lowest mark of the season. It is just the third time this season that the Gaels shot below 40 percent.
- The two sides combined to score 87 points, the second lowest total in a league contest this season (Fairfield defeated Marist, 43-34, on Jan. 14, 2023).
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- With the win, Iona (20-5 overall, 15-1 MAAC) remains atop the conference standings. Iona has already clinched a top-five seed and an opening round bye in the 2023 MAAC Basketball Championship and is two wins shy of securing its second-ever MAAC Regular Season Championship.

- Camilion now has 1,537 points for her career, remaining in sole possession of No. 6 on the program's all-time scoring leaderboard. She is 22 points shy of passing Megan Cobb for fifth-most points all-time in Iona women's basketball history.
- Iona's starting five of Athias, Camilion, Gomez, Hodge-Carr and Mager made their 24th overall and 16th consecutive appearance together this season.
- Head coach Billi Chambers earned her 135th career victory overall and 99th in conference play.
- Today was the 2nd-ever meeting between Iona and Mount St. Mary's and Iona's first trip to Emmitsburg, Maryland in program history. Iona has emerged victorious in both contests.
