RADFORD, VA - Following yesterday's opening day victory, the Iona University baseball team dropped the middle game of the series to Radford 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at Sherman Carter Memorial Stadium.
Jake Field continued his hot start at the plate, hitting a two-run homer but soon after, the Highlanders bats came alive, responding with nine unanswered runs to pull away from the Gaels.
Game Summary
After an injury shortened freshmen campaign,
Nick Chiaia returned to the bump for the Gaels and began his afternoon tossing two scoreless innings. Chiaia picked his first strikeout of the '23 season in the first, and with runners on second and third in the second, Chiaia recorded an inning-ending strikeout to escape trouble.
With two outs in the third,
Nick Forney reached on a single to extend the inning and the following batter, Field, stepped up and delivered a two-run shot over the left field wall. For the second straight game, Field broke the scoreless tie, giving Iona the lead.
However, in the home half of the inning, the Highlanders responded scoring four runs on four hits to take the lead. Tristan Shoemaker drove in the go-ahead run on a RBI triple and later came into score after an RBI single from Peyton Henry.
Andrew Gaines came in relief and managed to limit the damage at four runs, recording an inning-ending strikeout.Â
Radford added to their lead, scoring a run in the fourth and fifth inning and now trailing 6-2, Tanner Barrs launched a three-run homer to open up a 9-2 advantage for the Highlanders through six innings of play.
Following the sixth, Iona's bullpen settled in as reigning MAAC All-Rookie team member,
Joey Kasper pitched a scoreless seventh and
Loncey Conyers picked up three strikeouts in his lone inning of work. Unfortunately, the Gaels bats couldn't overcome the deficit, as Iona dropped game two of the series, 9-2.
