JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona University men's basketball team did not trail for the second straight contest in a 73-53 win over Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Run Baby Run Arena. The Gaels earned their 20th overall victory of the season and extended its season-long win streak to seven games Sunday afternoon. Sophomore
Anton Brookshire had a career-high 22 points and junior
Nelly Junior Joseph had a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double to lead the Maroon & Gold on the road.
THE RUNDOWN
The Gaels opened a double-digit advantage less than seven minutes into the contest following a 7-0 run capped by a Brookshire jumper that made the score 14-4 with 13:09 on the clock. Just over a minute later, the Peacocks cut it to six points but Iona responded with 10 straight points to take its largest lead of the half. Brookshire's three ball at 8:25 put the Maroon & Gold ahead 28-12. The margin was 14 at the half.
Â
Iona's first 20-point advantage came at 13:51 when senior
Osborn Shema's free throw put the score at 55-35. The Gaels led by as many as 24 points with 10:49 left to play. Saint Peter's got within 15 points with less than four minutes to play but were outscored 7-2 the remainder of the contest.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Brookshire shot 8-for-12 from the field and 4-for-6 from distance and also set career highs in field goals and three-point field goals made. For the weekend, he averaged 15.5 points and 3.5 three-pointers in the Gaels two wins.
- Junior Joseph grabbed his 10th rebound in the final minute and had a chance at a 20-10 performance but was unable to covert late at the free throw line.
- Junior Daniss Jenkins posted 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting with two rebounds and two assists. He was limited to just 22 minutes due to foul trouble.
- Shema added nine points and eight rebounds with the help of a 5-for-6 performance from the charity stripe.
- Senior Parker Weiss converted both three point field goal attempts to add six points in the win.
- Senior Berrick JeanLouis had four rebounds and a team-best four assists and two blocks.
- Sophomore Walter Clayton was also hampered with foul trouble, playing just 24 minutes with his lone point coming from the foul line.
THE OPPONENT
- Saint Peter's graduate student Kyle Cardaci led with 12 points and Isiah Dasher had 11. The Gaels held the Peacocks sharp shooters to just 7-of-24 from the field and 3-for-12 from long distance.
- Corey Washington had eight points and a game-high 11 boards.
TEAM STATISTICS
- Iona shot 57.1% from the field (24-for-42) and from long distance (8-for-14) and limited Saint Peter's to a 27.6% field goal percentage and 21.7% (5-for-23) from beyond the arc.
- The Peacocks out rebounded the Gaels 38-32 and had a 9-4 advantage on second chance points.
- Iona had 14 assists and just eight turnovers, the 14th time this season the team has recorded 10 or less. Saint Peter's had five assists and just seven turnovers. The Maroon & Gold held a 14-9 advantage on points off turnovers.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- For the 24th time in 78 seasons Iona has recorded 20 wins. It is also the 11th time in the last 14 seasons the program has accomplished the feat.
- Junior Joseph posted his 14th double double in his last 15 appearances and 17th of the season. Entering the contest he ranked No. 4 in the nation behind St. John's Joel Soriano, Purdue's Zach Edey and Weber State's Dillon Jones.
- Brookshire became the sixth different Gael to have a 20+ point effort. Only three schools (Indiana, Texas Southern and Western Michigan) have more than six.
- The Gaels moved to two games ahead of second place Rider and Siena after the Broncs fell in double overtime at Quinnipiac. The team's magic number to clinch the No. 1 seed in the MAAC Championship in two weeks is three. Any combination of three Iona wins or three Rider/Siena losses would allow the Maroon & Gold to repeat as regular season champions.
- Iona clinched an opening round bye for the MAAC tournament with today's win. Depending on final seeding, the team's first game will be in the quarterfinal round on Wednesday or Thursday in Atlantic City. Tickets for the Gaels' first game can be purchased on IonaTickets.com.
