Iona MBB Routs Mount St. Mary's, 81-51

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's basketball team surrendered the first basket, followed with a 15-0 run and never looked back in an 81-51 victory over Mount St. Mary's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center. Five Gaels scored double-digit point totals led by sophomore Walter Clayton's 20-point effort.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona's early run extended to 28-9 at the midway point of the first half and 48-18 at the break. The Mountaineers chipped away and got within 18-points with less than six minutes remaining, but the Gaels finished the game on a 16-4 to match the visitors in the second frame on the scoreboard and complete their second 30-point MAAC win of the season at home.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Clayton scored 17 of his 20 points in the first half. He was 8-for-14 for the game and 4-of-5 from long distance. He added three steals, two rebounds and two assists.
  • Junior Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his 10th straight double-double with 15 points and 13 rebounds. The MAAC's rebounding leader has averaged 16.0 points and 11.7 rebounds over his last 10 games. Junior Joseph added two blocks, two steals and an assist.
  • Junior Daniss Jenkins added 12 points and six assists with four rebounds.
  • Senior Berrick JeanLouis also had 12 points with four rebounds and two steals.
  • Freshman Cruz Davis had 12 points off the bench, shooting 4-for-5 from the field with a three-pointer and a 3-for-3 effort from the line. The rookie guard is averaging 10.1 ppg over his last eight contests with five double-digit efforts.
  • Senior Osborn Shema posted seven points with three assists and three blocks.

THE OPPONENT

  • Dola Adebayo more than doubled his season-point effort with a career-best 13 points and six rebounds.
  • Three Mountaineers posted eight points apiece.

TEAM STATS

  • Iona outshot Mount St Mary's 53.6%-36.2%, converting 7-of-15 (46.7%) from distance while holding its opponent to 5-for-22 (22.7%) from beyond the line.
  • The Gaels held a 36-30 overall advantage on the boards but the Mountaineers led 11-8 on second chance points.
  • The Maroon & Gold had 15 assists and 13 turnovers while the visitors posted nine assists and 20 giveaways.

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • By virtue of Siena's loss at Manhattan, the Gaels are now even in the loss column with both the Saints and Rider who both hold one more win than the Gaels at the top of the MAAC standings.
  • It was Iona's 16th ever MAAC regular season win by 30 or more points.  Its two this season is one shy of the program record three set in 2011-12 and matches the effort from 2010-11.
