Iona Lacrosse Falls in Final Non-Conference Game

CONWAY, SC - The Iona women's lacrosse team fell to Coastal Carolina 15-10 in their final non-conference match-up. Sophomore Kira Varada led the offense with three goals and also led the team in draw controls and ground balls.

GAME SUMMARY

Coastal Carolina did not waste any time getting on the board, scoring in the first minute, then continued to dominate on both ends, scoring the first five goals of the game while keeping the Gaels off the board until 4:25 left in the first. Kira Varada was the Maroon & Gold's first net finder of the game she then added her second of the game seconds later to close the gap to three. CCU notched one more before the final buzzer of the quarter.

CCU opened the scoring once again in the second quarter, their two goals to start the quarter extended their lead to six with 12:19 left in the first half. Micaela FitzPatrick and Freshman Arianna Burns were able to cut the deficit to four goals. But the home team closed out the first half with two more goals regaining the six goal lead.

Both defenses were strong after the halftime break, as both offenses failed to score a goal in the first 10 minutes and CCU scored the lone goal of the quarter taking a seven goal lead into the final 15 minutes. Coastal Carolina opened the scoring for the fourth straight quarter, as they took a commanding nine goal lead with 11 minutes remaining.

Over those final minutes the Maroon & Gold out scored CCU 5-1 but the hole was too deep to climb out of, the five goals in the fourth came off the sticks of Varada, Amber Brewster, and Emily Stewart. Sophomore goalie Sofia Votto allowed 11 goals and made six saves, freshman Lauren Sweeny played the second half making seven saves, and allowing four goals.
