Iona Lacrosse Drops MAAC Opener

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona women's lacrosse program drops the first conference game of the year, 13-9 to the Saints. The Gaels battled through the rain but a couple yellow cards and a good defensive fourth quarter from Siena secured them the victory.

GAME SUMMARY

Siena opened the scoring in the first couple minutes capitalizing on a free position chance. Iona answered a few moments later off the stick of freshman Maylia Haddock, it was her fifth of the year in the Maroon & Gold. The Saints then went on a little two goal run taking a two goal lead with just less than half of the first quarter remaining. Goals from senior Amber Brewster and freshman Arianna Burns knotted it back up at 3-3, but a late goal from the Saints gave them a one goal advantage going into the second.

Haddock found her second of the game to start the second quarter bringing it back to all square. Three more goals from Brewster, Kate Krueger, and Alyssa Castellano gave the Gaels the first and biggest lead of the day. Siena closed the gap to two entering the half time break. Sophomore goalie Sofia Votto started the first and second half but three straight goals by the opposition to start the second half made Iona turn to the freshman Lauren Sweeney.

At the halfway mark of the third the regaining Rookie of the Year Kira Varada snuck one past the goalie to get the Maroon & Gold back to even. Siena answered quickly, regaining that one goal lead. Castellano closed out the third with another goal giving her two on the day and we went deadlocked at 9-9 with 15 left to play.

The final quarter was all Siena as they scored four straight unanswered goals and were able to keep the Gaels off the board. Iona had multiple chances but just couldn't get one to find the back of the net. Kira Varada had another big day with four ground balls, five draw controls,  and four caused turnovers.
