NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona women's lacrosse program fell 15-9 in their second MAAC game to the defending MAAC Champs the Fairfield Stags. The Gaels fall to 6-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.

GAME SUMMARY

First five minutes of the game were slow for both offenses and saw a lot of turnovers from both teams. The Stags opened the scoring with 10 minutes left in the opening quarter. They found the back of the net four minutes later and jumped to a 2 goal lead, a lead they never surrendered. Iona got on the scoreboard off the stick of Kira Varada, it was her 27th goal of the season. Fairfield closed out the quarter with another goal in the final seconds, regaining the two goal lead to start the second 15.

The first half of the second quarter was all the opposition as they scored three goals and kept the Gaels off. Iona trimmed the Stags lead from 6-1 to 6-2 with a goal from Micaela Fitzpatrick, her 19th of the year. Fairfield answered with two more goals extending their lead to six with 6:11 left in the first half. Iona gained some momentum with two goals from Emily Stewart and Amber Brewster heading into the halftime break.

Fairfield started the scoring for the third straight quarter, and they did not stop at one. The Stags scored five straight goals and extended their lead to nine, 13-4. Iona answered with two goals to close out the third quarter, both goals came from Stewart in woman-up opportunities.

Iona continued to score and keep the Stags off the scoreboard in the fourth as the closed the gap to 13-8 with 4:58 left to play but two quick goals from the away team put a stop to the Gaels comeback and they were able to close it out. Both Brewster and Fitzpatrick notched hat tricks. Kira Varada added one goal, two assists, two ground balls, two caused turnovers, and seven draw controls.
