Iona Lacrosse Earns First MAAC Win On Senior Day

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona women's lacrosse picked up their first conference win of the season, with a 19-14 win over Canisius. Iona improves to 7-4 and 1-2 in MAAC play. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Sweeney recorded her first career start and win today. Iona also celebrated its five seniors, Amber Brewster, Kate Nieves, Paige Christensen, Emily Stewart, and Abigail Natoli prior to today's match.

GAME SUMMARY

Iona's offense got off to a hot start scoring the first three goals and jumping to a three goal lead that they would not surrender the rest of the game. Iona's first three goals came from Stewart, Kira Varada, and Christensen which was the first of her career. It took the GOlden Griffs nearly 12 minutes to get on the board, just as they did the Gaels extended their lead to four off the sticks of Micael FitzPatrick and Laine Walterson. Canisius closed out the first with one more goal closing the gap to three entering the second frame.

Canisius carried the momentum into the second quarter scoring the first two goals of the quarter and closing the Iona lead to just one. THe Maroon & Gold stuck to their game and went on a seven goal run giving them a commanding 12-4 lead. Canisius found the back of the net once again in the final minute of the quarter. Iona entered the halftime break with a 12-5 lead.

The Golden Griffs did not back down despite being down seven, the opposition scored the first two goals of the third, closing it to a five goal game. Alexa Skoubas capitalized on a woman-up chance and scored the Maroon & Gold's first goal of the second half. Canisius answered that with another two goal run, but Fitzpatrick answered with an insurance goal with 3:30 remaining in the quarter.

Iona opened the fourth quarter with a 14-9 lead, Canisius kept trying to crawl back scoring the first three goals of the final 15 minutes and closing it to a two goal game. But three goals in a two minute span from the gaels extended the lead back to five. Goals from Alexa Maggiacomo and Alyssa Castellano in the final minutes sealed the victory for the Gaels.
