Iona Lacrosse Falls In Mid-Week MAAC Game

EMMITSBURG, MD - Iona women's lacrosse traveled to Mount St. Mary's to take on the new conference member. A strong fourth quarter from the Mountaineers gave them the edge over the Gaels as they won, 15-9.

GAME SUMMARY
Iona got the game started with a powerplay goal from Micaela FitzPatrick, the junior gave the Maroon & Gold the lead 3 minutes into the game. Sophomore Kira Varada extended their lead to two with her team leading 30th goal of the season. Mount got on the board five minutes into the game, but Iona answered with two more goals from Kate Krueger and Laine Walterson extending their lead to 4-1. The home team got one more past freshman Lauren Sweeney closing the lead to two. Both teams went cold in the final five minutes of the opening quarter. 

Mount started the scoring in the second quarter closing the Iona lead to one in the first two minutes. Both teams went cold again on the offensive end before Iona found the back of the net off the stick of Walterson, her second of the game, with five minutes remaining in the first half. Over the final four minutes the Mountaineers closed the first half with two more goals and knotted things up at 5-5 entering the halftime break.     

Mount St. Mary's opened the scoring quickly to start the third quarter taking the first lead of the game. Mount would never be down the rest of the game. Emily Stewart notched her first of the game to tie things back up at 6-6. Iona was outscored 2-1 over the final six minutes of the third frame, another goal from Stewat got the Gaels within one entering the final quarter. 

The fourth and final quarter was all Mountaineers, Iona was outscored 7-2, Stewart recorded a hat trick in the first minutes of the quarter. Five straight goals from the opposition in a seven minute stretch sealed the victory.

Iona travels to Niagara for a 1 pm start on April 8, game will be available to stream on Watch ESPN.
