Scarduzio, Smith Lead Effort in WLAX 13-9 Loss to Manhattan

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – The Iona University women's lacrosse team fell to Manhattan College, 13-9, on Wednesday afternoon at Mazzella Field. Despite holding advantages in shots and ground balls and rallying late, a decisive second quarter by the Jaspers proved to be the difference.

The teams traded goals early, playing to a 2-2 tie after the opening quarter. However, Manhattan seized control in the second frame, using a 7-2 run fueled by efficient finishing and success on the advantage to take a commanding 9-4 lead into halftime.

Jocelyn Smith kept the Gaels within reach during the stretch, scoring a pair of unassisted goals in the second quarter.

Kacie Scarduzio led the Iona offense with a hat trick and an assist for a team-high four points, while Smith matched that total with two goals and two assists.

Additional scoring contributions came from Maliya Haddock, who opened the game's scoring, Abby Axe, who added a goal and an assist, Haley Lauer with a third-quarter tally, and Calen Norton, who scored late in the fourth off a Scarduzio assist.

Iona showed resilience down the stretch, outscoring Manhattan 3-1 in the final quarter, but the first-half deficit remained too large to overcome.

The Gaels finished with a 34-27 edge in total shots and a 24-20 advantage in shots on goal, while also winning the ground ball battle, 19-16. In net, Lauren Sweeney made seven saves, while Manhattan's Sophie Pasnak recorded 15 stops. The Jaspers also controlled the draw circle, winning 14 draws to Iona's nine.

Iona travels one last time this Saturday with a trip to Siena for an opening draw of 3 pm being streamed on ESPN+.
