Iona Baseball Falls to Saint Joseph’s on the Road

PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Iona University Baseball team dropped game one of their weekend series, losing to Saint Joseph's 15-5, at Smithson Field. Despite the loss, Luca Lotito launched his first home-run of the season and Jim Pasquale drove in his first two-runs of the season to lead the Gaels offense.

Game Summary

The Hawks scored three times in the bottom half of the first inning. Iona starter Teo Torrado began his outing with a strikeout and lineout, but following a walk, Brett Thomas opened up the scoring with a two-run homer. Saint Joseph's tacked on another run but Torrado kept the damage at three, picking up an inning ending strikeout.

Trailing 3-0, Iona responded with two runs that started with a leadoff home-run from Lotito, his first dinger of the season. Later in the inning with Anthony Febo who reached on single at third, Jayson Gonzalez brought him in to score on a two-out RBI triple.

Michael Lorenzetti came in relief and pitched a scoreless third inning but Saint Joseph's tacked onto their lead in the ensuing innings. Three Hawks came around to score in the fourth on an RBI double and single from Brett Thomas and Justin Igoe and the Hawks continued to add to their lead, scoring four more runs in the fifth to open up a 13-4 advantage.

The Gaels got their final run in the sixth; Anthony Zollo began the inning with a single and two batters later, Pasquale brough Zollo in on an RBI double. The Hawks managed to score two more runs and went on to take game one of the series, 15-5 on Friday afternoon.

Notable Nuggets

  • Lotito's second inning HR was the third of his season career in the Maroon & Gold.
  • Zollo recorded a career-high three hits, extending his hit streak to four games.
  • Josiah Ragsdale drove in the Gaels fourth run of the game on an RBI walk.
  • Andrew Gaines and Eric Gialloreto each pitched a scoreless inning in relief

The Gaels and Hawks will play a doubleheader tomorrow at Smithson field beginning at Noon.
