Iona SB Falls to UMass Lowell, Rutgers on Friday

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Iona University softball team lost to UMass Lowell and Rutgers on Friday in New Jersey. The Gaels and the Riverhawks battled for nine innings before Iona came up short; the Maroon & Gold were blanked by the Scarlet Knights in game two.

GAME ONE: UMASS LOWELL 4, IONA 3 (9 INN.)

Iona was first on the scoreboard after Jamie Sheeran opened up the game with a two-run homerun in the top of the first inning against UMass Lowell. Samantha Rieb kept the Riverhawks scoreless through the first five frames with a strong pitching performance.

The Gaels tacked on another run in the top of the fourth inning after Emma Capuano singled to the pitcher and Kaylin Flukey successfully moved her into scoring position with a base hit to left field. Another single to left field, this time from Kayla Haywood, allowed Capuano to safely cross home plate and score Iona's third run of the game.

In the sixth inning the Riverhawks began their comeback. The leadoff batter started the bottom of the inning off with a bang, tripling down the right field line. The next batter put the ball into play, with Iona going for the out at home, but the runner beat the throw to plate the Riverhawks' first run. Rieb dominated the next three batters, retiring them and ending the inning with just the one run allowed.

With the Gaels unable to add to their lead in the top of the seventh, UMass Lowell capitalized. Down to their final three outs, the Riverhawks tied the game at 3-3. The seventh inning began with a solo homerun. The following batter reached second base on an error, was bunted over to third and scored the tying run on a fielder's choice. The score was tied by the end of the seventh inning, sending the game into extras with international tie-breaking rules in play.

Freshman Dani Beckham entered the circle for the Gaels for extra innings. The eighth inning was scoreless on both sides, but the bottom of the ninth was when the Riverhawks secured the victory. The leadoff batter laid down a bunt in fair territory, sacrificing herself and moving the winning run to third base. A sacrifice fly to centerfield plated the runner from third and walked off the Gaels, 4-3.

GAME TWO: RUTGERS 4, IONA 0

Zazzaro started game two for the Maroon & Gold, pitching a clean first inning before Rutgers struck in the second inning. A leadoff double was followed by a sacrifice bunt and an infield single that plated the game's first run. Zazzaro worked out of the inning with just the one run coming across.

Kayla Haywood led off the fourth frame with a single, Iona's first hit of the contest. Haywood was eventually cut down trying to steal second for the second out. Capuano worked a two-out walk to keep the frame alive, but a fly out ended the fourth.

Iona put two runners on with two outs in the fifth, threatening to tie the game. The runners were stranded after a groundout and the Scarlet Knights responded in the bottom half with three runs. The insurance was enough cushion for Rutgers to take the game from Iona.
