Iona SB Beats UMass Lowell, Loses to Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, NJ - The Iona University softball defeated UMass Lowell before falling to host Rutgers later in the day on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels posted eight runs in the win over the Riverhawks before being limited to just one against the Scarlet Knights.

GAME ONE: IONA 8, UMASS LOWELL 5

Rookie Dani Beckham took to the circle in game one for Iona, retiring the Riverhawks in order to begin her morning. Iona's offense scored twice in the bottom half thanks to a Jessica Chilcott two-run shot.

The Gaels added three more runs in the second inning to jump out to a 5-0 advantage early on. The first three Gaels reached base before back-to-back sac flies plated a pair of runs. Jamie Sheeran added an insurance marker with an opposite-field, two-out single.

Beckham was tagged for three runs in the top of the third, but limited the damage to just that. She allowed a leadoff single and a homer to start the fourth frame and exited in favor of Lowry. With the score now tied at 5-5, Lowry would work out of the fourth and strand a pair of runners to keep the game tied.

The Maroon & Gold responded with three runs in the next inning to go back in front. None of Iona's three runs scored via a hit; two runners crossed on pitches that got past the catcher and the third was plated on a sacrifice fly. The three runs proved crucial for Iona, as Lowry and Kara Zazzaro combined to hold UMass Lowell scoreless for the final three innings and secure a victory for the Gaels.

GAME TWO: RUTGERS 9, IONA 1

Iona got the scoring started in game two of the day when Sheeran homered on a 3-2 pitch in the second inning, a solo shot to put the Gaels on top. Rutgers answered in the second inning with a solo shot of its own to even the score at one.

The Scarlet Knights added five more run in the third off of Alyssa DeJianne. Iona was retired in order in the fourth and fifth innings before Rutgers struck again. A sacrifice fly made it 7-1 and the lead blossomed to eight runs in the sixth, ending the game due to the mercy rule.
