NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University softball team fell to Fordham, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Donald E. Walsh Field.
Kara Zazzaro was saddled with a tough loss, striking out a season-high 16 batters and allowing two unearned runs.
GAME SUMMARY
Zazzaro worked around a walk and a base hit in the first inning, earning two of her 16 strikeouts to help get through a clean first frame. The Gaels were held without a hit their first trip through the lineup before Jessica Chilcott singled the opposite way to open the fourth for Iona's first hit against Bailey Enoch.
Chilcott's moved up to second base after Jamie Sheeran was plunked for the second time in as many trips to the plate. Kaylin Flukey laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move both runners up and Emma Capuano followed with a sacrifice fly that plated Chilcott for the first run of the day.
Fordham answered with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth, both of which were unearned. A bunt single was followed by another bunt, this time a sacrifice attempt that put runners on the corners with no outs after an error. On the first pitch to the third batter of the inning the runner from first took off, stealing second while the throw to an unoccupied second base sailed into centerfield and allowed the tying run to score. Zazzaro battled, striking out the next two hitters before a single down the line put the Rams ahead, 2-1.
Enoch worked around a walk in both the fifth and sixth innings, protecting the lead her offense managed to assume. Iona threatened in the seventh, but came up empty in its comeback. Brianna Bailey singled with one out and Kenadie Gonzalez drew a walk as a pinch hitter to put the winning run on base. Enoch got a strikeout and a ground ball to end the game and strand the tying run on second and winning run on first.
