Game Summary
Gaels starter
Alex Hunt ran into some early trouble as the Bulldogs chased the junior for three runs in the first frame. Iona's defense helped keep UNC Asheville off the scoreboard in the second and third inning, as Hunt and righty reliever
Thomas O'Sullivan picked up consecutive inning ending double-plays.
Clark Eder relieved O'Sullivan and retired the Bulldogs in order, picking up one of his two strikeouts in the inning. However, in the fifth inning the Bulldogs extended their lead on a home-run from Robbie Burnett and an RBI single off the bat of Michael Groves to push the lead to 6-0.
After Iona had their first three batters reach base to start the sixth, the Gaels quickly had a scoring opportunity. Kemp delivered with an RBI single through the left side, scoring
Nick Forney to put Iona on the board. Two batters later, Zollo stepped up and lined a single to right to score
Jake Field and cut the Bulldogs deficit to four runs. Zollo finished the weekend series, driving in three-runs for the Maroon & Gold.
After UNC Asheville managed to add a run on a RBI walk in the ensuing frame,
Matt Zguro came in relief with the bases-loaded and picked up consecutive strikeouts to go along with an inning ending ground out, limiting the damage to just a run.
However, in their final plate appearance UNC Asheville scored an additional five runs to go in front 12-2, as the Bulldogs completed the weekend sweep over the Gaels.
