Iona Women's Lacrosse Secures OT Win Over Lafayette

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Iona trailed most of the game but the defense and offense stepped up in the final minutes to force overtime, defeating Lafayette 11-10 with Kira Varada netting the game winner. Iona improves to 2-0 in overtime games and 6-1 on the season. 

GAME SUMMARY

Lafayette opened the scoring with the two first goals of the game, as it took the Gaels nine minutes to get on the board off a free position from sophomore Laine Walterson, Junior Micaela FitzPatrick closed out the first quarter with a free position goal of her own knotting things up at 2-2 heading into the second. 

Offenses matched each other throughout the second quarter but the Leopards out edged the Gaels by one and took a 6-5 lead into the halftime break. Kira Varada found the back of the net twice and FitzPatrick notched her second of the game. Sophomore goalie Sofia Votto made a season high nine saves in the first half.

Amber Brewster scored her 17th of the year to start the second half, the visitors answered with two straight goals of their own to extend their lead back to two. Over the final 7 minutes of the third Varada and Stewart combined for two goals as Lafayette scored one and the Gaels trimmed the lead to one entering the final 15 minutes. 

Both offenses started off slow in the fourth quarter, Lafayette waited 5 minutes before finding the back of the net, three minutes later Fitzpatrick recorded her hat trick and got the Gaels back within one with six minutes left to play. Iona's defense stepped up in the final minutes to keep Lafayette off the board as Senior Emily Stewart tied things up with 1 minute remaining to force a sudden death overtime. Votto stood on her head to start the overtime period making two stops, giving the Gaels plenty of time as Kira Varada scored with 16 second left off a beautiful assist from Fitzpatrick.    

NOTABLE NUGGETS

  • Sofia Votto set a career high with 17 saves in today's match. 
  • The Gaels are now 2-0 in overtime games this season.   
  • Both teams combined for 66 shots, with each team recording 33 each. 
  • Iona set a season high with 14 caused turnovers, Varada led with six. 
  • FitzPatrick stuffed the stat sheet with three goals and all three of Iona's assists.

Iona travels down south to Coast Carolina on Sunday March 12, scheduled for a noon opening draw.
