Iona SB Sweeps Niagara on Saturday

LEWISTON, NY - The Iona University softball team swept Niagara on Saturday afternoon, outlasting the Purple Eagles in extra innings in game one and using a combined shutout in game two to secure a second victory.

GAME ONE: IONA 5, NIAGARA 2 (11 INNINGS)

It was a slow start offensively on Saturday afternoon, seeing both starting pitchers toss four scoreless innings before the Purple Eagles opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Niagara's Maddi Hickingbottom was staked to a two-run lead after five innings after a pair of unearned runs came across to score against Kara Zazzaro.

Despite the unfortunate 2-0 deficit, Zazzaro continued to work from the circle and Iona's offense would battle back to even the contest in the next half inning. Jessica Chilcott hit a game-tying home run to center after a Hannah Werth infield single. The score would hold all the way into the top of the 11th when the Maroon & Gold finally broke through again.

Kaylin Flukey led things off with a double off the fence, a ball that nearly cleared the wall in left, eventually moving up to third with no outs after a Brianna Bailey single through the right side of the infield. Allie Taylor, who pinch ran for Flukey, came around to score the go-ahead run on a Kayla Haywood infield single. Emma Capuano would drive in Iona's second run of the frame with a single and a pair of walks, the latter drawn by Werth brought home the Gaels' third run of the inning.

Samatha Rieb, working into her second inning of relief of Zazzaro, closed things out in the bottom of the 11th with a 1-2-3 inning.

GAME TWO: IONA 3, NIAGARA 0

The second game was highlighted by another excellent performance in the circle, this time from Alyssa DeJianne. She worked six scoreless innings before giving way to Rieb for a save chance in the seventh with Iona ahead by three runs.

The majority of Iona's damage offensively came in the sixth inning, but a pair of singles from Chilcott and Jamie Sheeran helped the Maroon & Gold manufacture the first run of the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Capuano reached on a fielder's choice that allowed Chilcott to score the game's first run.

With two outs and the bases loaded in the sixth, Sheeran drew a walk to push home a run and Flukey would reach on a fielder's choice to make it a 3-0 lead for Iona. After DeJianne held Niagara scoreless in the sixth, Rieb entered and stranded two runners to complete the sweep and help the Gaels to their first two road wins of the 2023 season.

Iona heads across town to face the defending MAAC Champion Canisius Golden Griffins on Sunday. The Gaels and the Griffs are scheduled to begin doubleheader action at noon in Buffalo. Both games will be streamed live on ESPN+.
