Iona Lacrosse Falls On The Road At Quinnipiac

HAMDEN, CT - Iona women's lacrosse program fell to 2-5 in MAAC play after an 18-8 loss on the road at Quinnipiac. Iona's offense was led by Kira Varada, senior Emily Stewart led the Gaels with six draw controls. 

GAME SUMMARY

Both teams got off to a slow start as Micaela Fitzpatrick had the only shot of the game for the first four minutes before the hosts found the back of the net jumping to a one goal lead. Laine Walterson did not waste any time tying the game back up at 1-1 off an assist from Amber Brewster. Quinnipiac closed out the opening quarter with five unanswered goals, with the last being scored with one second left on the clock. 

The Bobcats started the second with two more goals making it seven unanswered before sophomore Kira Varada notched her first of the day pulling the Gaels within six. Less than a minute later Amber Brewster snuck one past the QU keeper making it a 8-3 game with 9:30 left in the first half. Varada scored her second of the day making it an 8-4 game at the 7:35 mark. Quinnipiac got back in the scoring column extending their lead back to five, notching her hat trick to close out the first half Varada made it a 9-5 game right before the halftime break. 

Emily Stewart got both teams started in the second half with her 95th of her career, the Bobcats felt the comeback from the Gaels and went on a quick two goal run over a minute to extend their lead back to five with 7:52 left to play in the third quarter. Over those final eight minutes both teams only found the back of the net once and the Bobcats took their five goal lead in the final 15 minutes. 

Over the final quarter the Gaels were out scored 6-1 Quinnipiac's defense shut the door and the Gaels were unable to muster a comeback.

Iona will wrap up their regular season on the road this Saturday, traveling to Poughkeepsie, NY to battle the Red Foxes of Marist.
