Six Different Players Record an RBI in Iona Baseball’s Home Win Over Siena

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University baseball team began its three-game series with a 12-4 victory over Siena, at City Park. Six different players recorded an RBI as the Gaels offense manufactured a run in seven of their eight plate appearances. With the victory Iona earns their eighth win of the season and improves to 4-6 in MAAC play.

Game Summary

Anthony Zollo scored Iona's first run of the afternoon following a throwing error that allowed Zollo to score from second base. After Siena got a run across in the second inning, the Gaels responded with consecutive RBI singles for the game's final lead change. Josiah Ragsdale lined an opposite field RBI single to break the tie and Jayson Gonzalez followed up with one of his career-high three hits in the game, this one scoring Chris Mariani on the play.

Teo Torrado, who earned his second win of the season, worked around a run in the third inning, picking up consecutive groundouts to keep Iona in front, 3-2. Jake Field began the bottom half of the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI from Jim Pasquale. Two batters later, Mariani drove in Iona's second run of the inning with a two-out RBI single, extending Iona's lead to 5-2 after three innings of play.

Following an RBI single from Aidan Stewart, Siena brought up the tying run to plate but Torrado picked up a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Gaels lead intact. Torrado finished the afternoon working five innings while allowing four runs, and adding three timely strikeouts. 

The Maroon & Gold stretched their lead to 8-3, following a three-run fourth inning. Zollo drove in a runner on a single and Luca Lotito got in the mix with an RBI single to center field, scoring Zollo. Pasquale kept the inning alive on a two-out sac-fly to give Iona an 8-3 lead after four innings. Iona's ninth run of the game came off the bat of Gonzalez who drove in his second runner on a double that one hopped the left field fence in the fifth inning.

Joey Kasper came in relief in the seventh inning and pitched two scoreless frames. Kasper picked up a strikeout in each inning and worked around minimal traffic on his way to a scoreless outing. 

Chris Mariani provided the final blow in the Gaels victory, launching a two-run homer to center field, extending Iona's lead to 12-4. Eric Gialloreto closed out the win, retiring all three batters he faced in the ninth inning, securing Iona's series opening win over Siena at City Park.

Iona will aim to make it two straight as Game two of the series will be tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 PM.
