LONG ISLAND, NY - The Iona University baseball team dropped a back and forth contest, losing to Stony Brook 11-10 in extra innings on Tuesday afternoon. The Gaels led 10-9 entering the final inning but the Seawovles rallied, scoring a run in the ninth and won the game in the 10th, on a walk-off single. Despite the loss,
Jake Field hit multiple home-runs for the second time this season, driving in four of Iona's 10 runs in the game.
Game Summary
After falling behind 2-0, Iona scored five unanswered runs between the second and fourth inning.
Nickolas Mora got the Gaels on the board with an RBI single and a two-run fourth inning homer from
Jake Field gave Iona its first lead of the afternoon.
Anthony Febo drove in Iona's fourth run after getting hit by a pitch and a sac-fly off the bat of
Phoenix Bowman gave Iona a 5-2 lead.
Leading 5-3, Field delivered his second two-run homer in as many innings to give Iona its largest lead of the afternoon, 7-3. After Stony Brook cut Iona's lead into a run, Bowman managed to bring in two runs on a sac-bunt attempt that resulted in an error, allowing
Chris Mariani and Mora to score on the play.
Stony Brook managed to tie the game after scoring three runs in the sixth on two singles and a sac-fly. Once again Bowman stepped up, giving Iona the lead right back after scoring
James Kemp on a sac-fly in the seventh.Â
Cooper Haseley inherited Iona's one run lead and managed to keep it intact, pitching two scoreless innings. Haseley retired the side while adding a strikeout in the seventh and worked around a leadoff single in the eighth on his way to a scoreless outing.
Matt Zguro came out of the bullpen in a save situation but with a runner already at first, an attempted steal led to multiple throwing errors allowing the tying runner to score on the play. Stony Brook looked in prime position to walk it off with runners on second and third and still nobody out, but in a true bend but not breaking moment, Zguro picked up consecutive strikeouts and an inning ending fly-out to bring the game into extra innings.Â
Despite a two out double from
Will Jennings, Iona didn't manage a run in the top of the tenth leading to Stony Brook walking it off on an RBI single from Evan Fox to complete the season sweep over the Gaels.
