Iona Baseball Falls at Home to Saint Peter’s

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University baseball team dropped game two of their three game series, losing 11-4 on Friday afternoon. The Peacocks scored six runs between the first and second inning and would not relinquish the lead on their way to evening up the series at City Park. Despite the loss, Jake Field homered for the second consecutive game, raising his total to a team best four home-runs on the season.

Game Summary

Saint Peter's began the game scoring three runs on RBI knocks from Nick Markantonatos, Jonathan Behm and Sam Haney. Nick Chiaia got the Gaels out of the frame with an inning ending strikeout.

After a scoreless first inning from the Gaels, the Peacocks added to their lead in their next at-bat. Saint Peter's scored three more runs off two hits but Chiaia buckled down picking up a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.

Carl Kuentzel came in relief and worked a scoreless third, fourth, and fifth inning, retiring nine of the 12 hitters he faced in that span. Trailing 6-0, Iona got a run back in the fourth on a sac-fly from Josiah Ragsdale, scoring Jayson Gonzalez on the play.

The Gaels tacked on another run in their ensuing plate appearance led by consecutive extra base-hits from Field and Jim Pasquale. Field ripped a double through the right side and Pasquale followed with an RBI triple, bringing Iona within four runs.

Now leading 7-2, Saint Peter's added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth and ninth inning. With two runners on, Haney lined an RBI double to score two runners, pushing the lead to seven runs. Chris Mariani cut the deficit back to six runs in the ensuing inning on an RBI single to left field that scored Gonzalez on the hit.

Down to their final two outs, Field stepped out and launched a solo-homer over the left field fence for Iona's fourth run of the afternoon. However, Saint Peter's got the final two outs to earn the 11-4 victory from City Park.
