Lewiston, NY - Iona women's lacrosse drops a game on the road in Lewiston, NY against Niagara, 16-11. Three different Gaels notched a hat trick in the loss. Freshman
Lauren Sweeney made her third straight start making 12 saves.  Â
GAME SUMMARY
Niagara started the scoring jumping out to a 2-0 lead after the first five minutes. Iona's offense was cold to start but caught fire in the final four minutes of the opening quarter and took a 3-2 lead entering the second quarter. Freshman Maylia Haddock scored two free position goals and Emily Stewart scored her 24th of the season.Â
Niagara scored the first three goals of the second to regain that two goal lead as the Maroon & Gold offense went cold again. But just like the first they caught fire again, this time in the final two and a half minutes they scored for straight entering the halftime break with a two goal advantage. Alexa Skoubas and Amber Brewster joined the scoring column, while Micaela Fitzpatrick found the back of the net twice, once on a free position with one second remaining.Â
Iona opened the second half scoring in the first 20 seconds with a goal from Stewart. The Purple Eagles answered two minutes later and 15 seconds after that Haddock notched her hat trick and gave the Gaels their three goal lead back. From 9:56 to 1:59 in the third the home team went on a five goal run giving them an 11-9 lead. Fitzpatrick got the Gaels back within one before the quarter ended.Â
Niagara started the fourth quarter with four straight goals giving them a five goal lead with 6:08 left to play. Stewart scored the lone goal for the Gaels in the final minutes giving her the third Gael hat trick of the day. Â
UP NEXT
Iona returns home for their final home game of the season on April 12th, the Gaels will host Manhattan for a 3 pm start.Â
