Iona Baseball Drops a Pair at Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CT - The Iona University baseball team dropped both contests to Fairfield on Friday afternoon at Alumni Baseball Diamond. The Gaels dropped game one in a high-scoring affair 15-9 and fell in game two, 23-4.

GAME ONE: FAIRFIELD 15, IONA 9

Fairfield jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings but the Gaels offense responded in the third. Jim Pasquale launched a two-run homer to cut into the lead but the Stags responded, scoring five unanswered runs to open up a 9-2 lead.

The Gaels climbed back into the game after scoring seven runs across the sixth and seventh innings. The rally began on a two-run RBI double from Anthony Zollo and an RBI from Will Jennings brought Iona within four runs. Trailing 10-5, Chris Mariani delivered a clutch grand slam, bringing the Gaels within a run while marking the second consecutive game Iona hit a grand slam.

However, the Stags responded with five runs in the bottom half of the frame to retake control of the game. Iona could not get another run across following the Mariani grand-slam and went on to drop game one of the doubleheader, 15-9.

GAME TWO: FAIRFIELD 23, IONA 4

Iona scored two runs to start the second game of the doubleheader as a sac-fly off the bat of Jake Field brought in Phoenix Bowman. Josiah Ragsdale followed through with an RBI single, giving the Gaels a 2-0 lead. With his first inning RBI, Field is now two RBI shy of breaking the single season record for most runs batted in, in program history.

After Fairfield tied the game on a home-run, Jennings put Iona back in front on a second inning RBI single. Unfortunately the Stags turned the tide scoring 14 unanswered runs to take control of game two.

Iona's fourth and final run of the game came on an RBI walk drawn by Nickolas Mora in the sixth inning. The Stags managed to score seven more runs across the final three innings on their way to completing the doubleheader sweep.
