NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's basketball team earned a 70-58 win over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Friday night at the Hynes Center. Four Gaels reached the double-digit point mark led by 14 apiece by graduates
Wheza Panzo and
Idan Tretout. The Maroon & Gold finished its three-game homestand with back-to-back wins and hit the road for the next two.
THE RUNDOWN
The first 11 and a half minutes saw eight lead changes and one tie score and remained within one possession until a free throw by the Griffs' Frank Mitchell gave the visitors a 20-16 advantage with 10:03 left. Iona responded to its largest deficit with eight straight points and finished the final 9:35 on a 20-7 run and held a nine-point, 36-27 lead at the break. Prior to the run, Canisius shot 9-for-17 from the field over the first 9:25 with no turnovers. Over the final 10:35, the Griffs were 3-for-8 with nine turnovers.

Canisius scored the first four points of the second half to pull within five points. The Gaels again responded with a 12-3 run with six points each from Panzo and junior
Greg Gordon opening up a 48-34 advantage with 14:38 remaining. Iona held on to the double-digit advantage the remainder of the way, leading by as many as 18 points following a Tretout jumper in the lane at the 3:32 mark. Canisius scored the final six points of the game to close the final margin to 12.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Panzo shot 5-for-12 from the field and 4-of-11 from long distance, adding three steals, two rebounds, two assists and two blocks.
- Tretout was 5-for-14 with three long distance makes, posting three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Gordon netted 13 points and a team-best eight rebounds. He had two steals and an assist.
- Graduate Joel Brown had 12 points and matched a season-best with seven assists. He increased his MAAC-leading assist-to-turnover ratio for the season to 4.1 with zero turnovers in the win.
THE OPPONENT
- Mitchell led four Griffs in double-figures with a 13-point, 17-rebound double-double.
- TJ Gadsden and Cam Palesse added 12 points each. Gadsden posted six boards.
- Devean Willams had 10 points and Tre Dinkins netted seven points and a team-best six assists.
TEAM STATS
- The Griffs outshot the Gaels 47.9%-41.0%.
- The visitors were just 3-for-17 (17.6%) from long distance but were 20-for-31 (64.5%) inside the arc.
- Iona shot 10-for-27 (37.0%) on three-point attempts and 15-for-34 (44.1%) from two.
- Canisius also held a 35-30 advantage overall on the boards, but a 10-6 deficit on the offensive glass and 9-4 on second chance points.
- Iona posted 17 assists and eight turnovers while Canisius recorded 12 assists and 19 giveaways.
UP NEXT
The Gaels hit the road for two games beginning Sunday at first-place Quinnipiac. Iona's lone game next week is at Siena Friday night and next home game in two weeks against surging Fairfield.
