Iona Swimming & Diving Falls at Home to Fordham

In their second dual meet in a span of five days, the Iona University Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Team dropped a pair of dual meets to the visiting Rams of Fordham.

The Iona women fell to 2-7 on the season as they were outscored 222-74. The Iona men go to 4-4 on the season after a tight 162-126 meet that saw the Gaels close to within 8 points only to fall back over the last three events.

The Iona women picked one first place win with sophomore Katherine Sarnes continuing her strong second half swimming, taking the1000-yard Free at 10:52.57, leading a 1-2-3 effort with teammates Tristan Urso (10:55.49) and Kate Kennedy (10:59.92) closing strong. However, the visitors went on a run, taking the next 13 events, with Ashley Benkert, Megan Josephs and Isabelle Nicholson taking silver spots in the 100-Butterfly, 100-Free and 50-Free, respectively at 58.80, 54.39 and 24.74.

A bright spot for the Iona Women was the home debut of freshmen diver Emma Todd, who competed on the 1-Meter Springboard for the first time this year. Todd sustained a foot injury in practice in October and had a lengthy rehab that yielded fourth place points today.

The Iona men battled in every race and once again saw Senior co-captain Michael Faughnan take three golds, including back-to-back efforts in the 1000-Free and the 200-Free with times of 9:46.48 and 1:40.44, respectively. Faughnan also won the 500-Free at 4:43.86.

Freshman Kieran Egan took both the 100 and 200 Backstroke events with times of 50.47 and 1:51.12, respectively. Classmate Noah Giunta came from behind to win the 200-Butterfly at 1:56.10.

On the diving board, Sophomore Dylan Riccio, continues to demonstrate improvement with taking wins in both the 1-Meter event (242.33) and a season best on the 3-Meter board at 250.95.

"We demonstrated strong aggressiveness today in our races and that is something we have to do as we continue to prepare for our MAAC Championships next month, "commented Head Coach Nick Cavataro.

Iona returns to the pool Saturday for the final dual meet of the season and the Senior Day (12:45pm) Ceremony followed by Manhattan at 1:00pm.
