Iona WBB Defeated by Canisius Thursday Night

NEW ROCHELLE, NY— The Iona University women's basketball team fell 53-43 to Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic conference play at the Hynes Center Thursday night.
 
Graduate student Sierra DeAngelo registered a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds for the Maroon & Gold. Junior Ella Fajardo posted an all-around effort with 14 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Junior Judith Gomez added 11 points and five rebounds for the Gaels.

THE RUNDOWN

Iona raced out to an early lead in the opening quarter on a pair of layups by Fajardo and a floating jumper from Gomez for a 6-2 advantage at the media timeout. Both teams traded baskets over the next three minutes as the first quarter neared its end. Canisius added a driving layup in the final 56 seconds to put Iona's lead at 12-10 after one quarter of play.
 
That momentum carried over for the visiting Golden Griffins with a 14-2 stretch to begin the second quarter for a 24-14 lead with 5:13 to go. The Gaels had a 6-0 run on a three-pointer by sophomore Petra Oborilova and an old fashioned three-point play from DeAngelo to make it a four-point game shortly after. Canisius responded with a step back jumper before going quiet the final three minutes of the period. Fajardo grabbed the final points of the half on a driving layup and free throw to make it a 26-23 game at the half.
 
Iona stayed within three points through the first two and a half minutes of the third period, answering Canisius baskets with a layup from DeAngelo and a three-pointer from Gomez. The Golden Griffins controlled the remainder of the quarter, outscoring Iona, 11-5 over the final 6:27 to take a 42-33 lead into the final quarter.
 
Canisius grabbed the first six points of the fourth quarter to take its largest lead of the game, 48-33 with 5:18 remaining. DeAngelo picked up a layup for Iona's first points of the frame before Fajardo chipped in a layup of her own. The closest Iona would cut the deficit to was eight on a three-pointer from Gomez with 28 seconds remaining. Canisius sealed the game at the foul line for the 53-43 win.

IONA PERFORMERS

  • DeAngelo posted her ninth game in double figures this season, finishing with a team-high 15 points and seven rebounds to go with two blocks and a steal.
  • Fajardo tallied 14 points, her fifth game scoring double-digits for the Gaels. She had an all-around game, recording six rebounds and five assists. Fajardo added a career-high three steals on the defensive end.
  • Gomez registered fourth straight game in double figures and the ninth time this season. She recorded 11 points with three made three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds.
  • Oborilova recorded a career-high three blocks on the defensive end.

THE OPPONENT

  • Sisi Eleko registered a double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Golden Griffins.
  • Grace Heeps recorded eight points and six rebounds to go with a block and steal.
  • Bri Rozzi posted eight points and three assists. Athina Lexa added seven points and three steals.

TEAM STATS

  • For the game, Canisius shot 39.6% from the floor while Iona shot 31.6%.
  • The two teams sit atop the MAAC from three-point shooting hovering around 35% coming into the contest. Both teams struggled beyond the arc on Thursday night as Canisius shot 16.7% (3-of-18) and Iona recorded a 14.8% (4-of-27) from distance.
  • Canisius won the rebounding margin, 39-32 on the night.
  • Iona committed 14 turnovers while Canisius turned the ball over 15 times. Both teams registered six steals.
  • The Gaels recorded a season-high five blocks on the defensive end.

AROUND THE MAAC

  • Mount St. Mary's defeated Saint Peter's 52-49 at Knott Arena on Thursday afternoon for their second straight win.
  • Fairield continued its winning streak Thursday evening, besting Quinnipiac, 74-59 at M&T Bank Arena.
  • Niagara picked up its second consecutive win, downing Rider, 81-62 at home.
  • Manhattan recorded its fourth straight win with a 60-54 victory over Marist at Draddy Gymnasium.

The Gaels will hold Alumni Day on Saturday, January 27. The Maroon & Gold square off against rival Manhattan, tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at the Hynes Athletic Center.
