Iona MSOC Falls Late to Siena, 2-1

LOUDONVILLE, NY— The Iona University men's soccer team fell on the road against Siena, 2-1 at Ben Hickey Field on Saturday afternoon. The Gaels took the lead on a 56th minute goal from junior Sergio Gonazlez Fernandez before Siena scored two goals late in the second half to take the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference bout.

Gonzalez Fernandez scored the only goal for the Maroon and Gold off the free kick strike from 18-yards. He is now tied for the conference lead in goals scored and paces the league circuit with 15 points this season.

GAME SUMMARY

It was a duel in the first half with strong defensive play by both sides, limiting the offensive attacks. Iona was limited to just two shot attempts in the first eight minutes by sophomore Francesco Borla and senior Thiago Cagna missed just high of the goal. Siena attempted four shots in the opening half all off target as the Iona back line applied pressure.

The action kicked up in the second half between the two squads at the top of the MAAC table. Iona finally broke through in the 57th minute, earning a free kick from a hard tackle resulting in the first of two yellows for Jesper Schone Vogtengen of Siena. Gonzalez Fernandez lined the ball up and delivered a strike over the wall in bending towards the upper 90 and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Siena found the equalizer in the 62nd minute with a pair of one touch passes including a cross from end line on the left side that resulted in a header for Zach Gardener to find the back of the net from the center of the box. In the 67th minute, Schone Vogtengen found his second yellow card, resulting in a red card leaving the Saints down a man for the final 23 minutes of play.

In the 72nd minute, Siena was able to get the breakthrough goal on a long through ball from Henrik Winkelmann was sent way into the attacking third for Lee Mara to chase down past the Iona defense and chip in the strike and 2-1 advantage.

Over the remaining minutes, the Gaels fired home nine shots looking to tie the game up. The Saints played strong defense as only one shot went on target, a strike in the 85th minute by Iona rookie Antony Recinos got denied by Bennet Glinder.
