NEW ROCHELLE, NY— The Iona University women's soccer team battled Marist to a 1-1 draw on Homecoming weekend at Mazzella Field. Down after a first half goal from the Red Foxes, senior captain
Myla Rodrigues scored the equalizer in the 76th minute.
Rodrigues scored her second goal of the season for the Maroon & Gold. Graduate student
Kate McNally registered the assist on the corner kick goal. She leads the team with six assists this season and recorded the 15th assist of her career, tying the program record set by hall of famer Tatum Nussbaum from 1992-1994.
GAME SUMMARY
Marist controlled possession from the jump, outshooting the Gaels, 6-2 in the first 30 minutes and consistently worked inside the Iona zone. Rookie
Kayla Kalbaugh made a pair of saves during that stretch for the Gaels.
The Red Foxes finally broke through in the 38th minute on header off the left post by Sophia Dorsey on the corner kick assist by Kelsey Peduto for the 1-0 advantage.
Iona's best chance in the opening half came two minutes later as sophomore
Marissa Graziano lined up for the free kick from 20-yards out, but Maddy Catalanotti made the diving save.
Out of the halftime break both teams missed a couple chances narrowly off target and traded ample time in the oppositions zone. The Gaels were building towards the equalizer with a couple corner kicks to begin the half. In the 76th minute, Iona took another corner kick on the left side. McNally delivered a cross towards the far post and Rodrigues was there to bury the shot in the upper 90 to tie the game up at 1-1.
Iona's defense did a good job of limiting the Marist attack in the second half, holding the opposition without a shot attempt for the final 37 minutes of the game. The Gaels had one final attempt to jump ahead in the 85th minute but Rodrigues shot was denied by Catalonotti to hold the score at 1-1.
