HAMDEN, CT — The Iona University women's soccer team had its five-game unbeaten streak snapped on Saturday afternoon, falling to league leading Quinnipiac, 2-1. First year forward
Dolene Smith got the scoring started for the Maroon & Gold before the Bobcats scored two unanswered goals to take the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference battle at Quinnipiac Soccer & Lacrosse Stadium.
Smith became the 11
th different goal scorer for the Maroon & Gold this season. The Enfield, CT native picked up her first collegiate goal in the fifth minute of play. Rookie goalkeeper
Kayla Kalbaugh tied her career-high with eight saves in goal for the Gaels.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona applied pressure early from the opening whistle against the league leading Bobcats. A great defensive play by Smith in the fifth minute with the steal from the defender from eight yards out. She took one dribble and fired the ball past the goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead.
From there the Quinnipiac offense got going, firing home six shot attempts in the next 25 minutes with Kalbaugh and the Iona defense recording four combined saves. The Bobcats finally broke through in the 36
th minute on a free kick chance from 20-yards out. Kalbaugh punched away the initial shot, but the ball clanked off the crossbar and back into play. Rachel Roman made the pass as the ball went towards the endline to an open Victoria Foster to tie the game up at 1-1.
Quinnipiac controlled the opening half with a 11-2 advantage on shots including a 6-1 margin for shots on goal. After the halftime break, Quinnipiac continued to push the tempo as Kalbaugh had to make three saves for the Gaels in the first 20 minutes of the restart.
Iona got its first chance of the second half in the 69
th minute on a free kick on the left side a couple yards off the endline. Sophomore
Marissa Graziano fired a curling shot towards the near post, but Quinnipiac's defense made the save to keep the score tied. A few minutes later the Gaels had another look on goal as Smith rifled a shot from 18-yards out that missed just high of the top right corner of the goal.
The Bobcats nabbed the go-ahead goal in the 74
th minute as Klara Bengtsson booted the ball from 18-yards out and went bar down off the crossbar and across the goal line for the 2-1 advantage. Kalbaugh made her final save of the game in the 80
th minute for the Maroon & Gold. Iona looked for more late game heroics after Wednesday's come from behind win, but the Bobcats defense thwarted any forward momentum to take the game 2-1.
