Iona VB Tops Saint Peter's for Fifth MAAC Win

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Iona University Volleyball team earned their fifth victory in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference over Saint Peter's. The Gaels staged a comeback after trailing the Peacocks 1-2, boosted by a team total of 12.0 blocks. Four players in Maroon & Gold totaled double digit kills, with rookie Mija Jegers taking home a double-double. The victory extends Iona's winning streak against the Peacocks to 16, their longest active win streak against any current MAAC opponent 

AS IT HAPPENED

Iona found themselves up four late into the first, but an 8-2 run would see the hosts take the opening set 25-23. A strong return saw the Maroon & Gold have their most efficient set of the afternoon, hitting .313. Kenzie Wiggins tallied an outstanding eight kills in a 25-22 second set win. While the Gaels took a wire-to-wire victory in the second, the third set would see a game-high six lead changes and the two sides would be forced into tiebreaker points. The Peacocks would edge Iona 28-26 for their second set victory of the afternoon. Bouncing back from the tight third set the Maroon & Gold forced Saint Peter's into 10 attack errors, the hosts highest tally in any set across the match. Iona would take the lead from the very beginning and once again not give it back, at one point storming to a 10-point lead before closing out their fourth set victory 25-20. Momentum from the fourth would be carried into the deciding set. Grace Ehler, Kenzie Wiggins, and Mija Jegers would throw in a pair of kills each in a 15-9 finale in favor of the Gaels. 

IONA PERFORMERS

  • Reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Mija Jegers totaled her fourth double-double of the season, with a game-leading and personal season high of 23 digs followed by a dozen kills. The outside hitter's night finished with 13.5 points with one service ace and an assisted block. 
  • Kenzie Wiggins led the Maroon & Gold with 16 kills, tallying 17.0 points after adding two assisted blocks to her stats sheet. 
  • Jen Soto finished with 15.5 points after totaling 10 kills and season highs on both services aces and assisted blocks with three and five respectively. With this afternoon's total, the Phoenix, Arizona native now has over one thousand points in Maroon & Gold. 
  • Emma Vu led the team in assists once again with 24. The Senior fell three digs short of a double-double, finishing the match with seven.  
  • Graduate student Grace Ehler became the fourth Gael totaling double-digit kills, with 10. The Tucson, Arizona native counted six assisted blocks, ending the afternoon with 13.0 points. 

THE OPPONENT

  • Penelope Rivera led all players on court with 18 digs. The Senior would take home a double-double after totaling a baker's dozen in digs.  
  • Cleopatra Diakou and Danielle Caligiuri would evenly combine for 50 assists, tying for the highest tally on court.  

UP NEXT

The Maroon & Gold head home from their two-game New Jersey road trip with a midweek match up hosting Manhattan. First serve from the Hynes Athletics Center is set for Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
