NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The Iona University women's basketball team fell to Charleston, 77-41 in midweek action at the Hynes Athletic Center on Wednesday night.
THE RUNDOWN
Both teams traded blows to start the game as sophomore
Emma Donnelly and junior Amaya Evans chipped in points for the Maroon & Gold. The remainder of the first quarter was all Charleston with a 15-0 closing stretch to take firm hold of the game.
The Cougars continued to roll with the opening basket of the second quarter. Iona punched back as rookie
Destinee Salgado kicked off an 8-4 run for the Maroon & Gold with an old fashioned three-point play. Another layup from Salgado and a triple from sophomore
Zoey Ward cut the deficit to 12 prompting a Charleston timeout. It was back and forth for the final 6:33 as the visitors took a 38-20 lead into the intermission.
Charleston continued to cruise into the second half outscoring Iona, 39-21 in the final two quarters to take the non-conference tilt.
IONA PERFORMERS
- 11 different Gaels picked up baskets on the night
- Salgado tied her career-high with seven points to go with four rebounds and two assists.
- Zaccagnini also tallied seven points for Iona.
- Ward finished with a team-high five rebounds.
- Rookies Adrianna Gonzalez and Nevaeh Stone recorded their first career points on Wednesday night.
THE OPPONENT
- Taylor Barbot registered a game-high 15 points and five assists for Charleston
- Lara Rohkohl posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
TEAM STATS
- Charleston went 43.1% from the field and Iona shot 32.6% for the game.
- The Cougars shot 37.5% from distance with nine made triples while Iona shot 20% with three makes from downtown.
- Charleston commanded the glass with 43 rebounds and held the Gaels to just 28 boards.
- The Cougars forced 29 turnovers while Iona forced 15 turnovers for the game.
