HAMILTON, NY — The Iona University women's basketball team finished its three-game week with a 62-40 setback to UMBC in the consolation game of the Colgate Thanksgiving Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Ally Carman led the Maroon & Gold with seven points each. Senior
Erin Leary posted a team-high four rebounds to go with three steals and three blocks on the defensive end.
THE RUNDoWN
The Retrievers raced out to an 8-0 lead in the opening minutes forcing Iona to call timeout. Ward got Iona on the board with three made free throws at the midway point of the quarter. The Retrievers continued to pace the opening stanza, building to a 21-8 lead at quarters end.
UMBC held serve in the second stanza and took advantage of Iona foul trouble to take a 25-point lead into the break. The Retrievers continued to push the tempo in the second half to earn the wire-to-wire win.Iona battled in the second half, holding a 30-27 scoring advantage led by 14 points from Carman and Fajardo but the first half deficit was too much to overcome.
IONA PERFORMERS
- Fajardo posted seven points, all in the second half on 3-of-4 shooting.
- Carman totaled a season-high seven points to go with a pair of rebounds and an assist.
- First-year Chloe Vasquez recorded a career-high five points.
- Leary chipped in three points along with a team-high four rebounds. On defense she led Iona with three steals and three blocks.
THE OPPONENT
- The Retrievers had three scorers in double digits led by 16 points from Jaliena Sanchez. She also tallied a game-high four assists.
- Jaden Walker totaled 12 points and Talia Davis added 11 points.
- Jordon Lewis recorded a game-high seven rebounds to go with nine points.
TEAM STATS
- UMBC shot 42.2% for the game while Iona was held to a season-low 25.9% from the field.
- The Retrievers shot 54.5% from distance with six made triples while the Gaels shot 11.1% from downtown with a season-low two made threes.
- UMBC owned the battle on the glass, 40-28.
- Iona tied its season-high with 13 steals, forcing 23 UMBC turnovers. The Gaels turned the ball over 17 times, allowing just one steal.
