Iona Water Polo Goes 1-1 To Start Weekend

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Iona women's water polo returned to action this weekend and started off winning a thriller in OT, 15-13 over Salem. Later in the day they fell to Indiana 19-5 to start the 2024 Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Indiana. Lola Trujillo led the Gaels offense today with five goals, four coming in the win over Salem. 

IONA 15 SALEM 13 OT

Iona outscored the Tigers 3-2 in the first quarter with goals coming from Kaya Hart, Amelia Gonzalez, & Bella Morquecho. Iona outscored the opposition by one goal once again in the second quarter, with Trujillo notching two, Maleah Penman, and Kaitlyn Williams adding one each. 

With a two goal lead entering the second half, the Gaels kept the two goal lead going into the final eight minutes. Third quarter goals came from the hands of Gonzalez, Handali, & Trujillo notching her hat trick. Salem outscored the Maroon & Gold 3-1 in the final quarter extending the game to overtime. Iona used a strong first overtime period to take a three goal lead that they would surrender. Addison Collins would join the Gaels who found the back of the net.

In net for the Gaels Lilly Morris and Soler, Zasha Split time in goal each playing 32 minutes. They combined for 12 saves on 33 shots faced. As a team Iona recorded eighth steals and drew 12 exclusions. Lola continued her perfect swim-off record going 6-for-6.     

IONA 5 INDIANA 19

Mia Tovar, Jori Aventurado, Trujillo, and Sadie Sallas (2) scored the five Iona goals, Gonzalez had the Gaels lone assist. Iona shot the ball 23 times and gave up 37 to Indiana. 

In net for the Maroon & Gold Morris and Zasha split time once again, combining for nine steals and one steal each. As a team the Gaels posted five steals and drew three Indiana kick outs. Trujillo's perfect swim-off streak came to an end as she went 1-and-1 on two attempts. 

Gaels return tomorrow with two more games with Michgian scheduled for the morning game and Saint Francis PA in the afternoon.
