Iona Water Polo Splits Second Day Of Indiana Invite

BLOOMINGTON, IN - Iona women's water polo once again split the day for the fourth time this year, falling to Michigan early this morning and ending the weekend with a win over Saint Francis (PA). Iona's record is now 4-4 after eight games. 

IONA 9 MICHIGAN 19

In the loss to the Wolverines Iona scored nine goals on 26 shots and assisted on five of the nine goals. The Iona offense was led by Bella Morquecho, Mia Tovar, and Amelia Gonzalez with two goals each. Isabella Adams, Williams, Kaitlyn, and Sadie Sallas had a tally themselves. Tovar added two assists to her stat sheet for a team high nine points. As a team the Gaels drew ten Michigan kick outs.

In net Zasha Soler started her first career game for the Maroon & Gold, playing all 32 minutes. She made six saves and added two steals. As a team the Gaels stole the ball seven times with Tovar setting another team high with three. Iona was kicked out seven times, Gaels also lost all four swim-offs. 

IONA 10 Saint Francis (PA) 8

Iona entered the halftime break up one goal and it was a lead they would not surrender. The Iona offense was led by sophomore Lola Trujillo with three goals. Sallas added two goals, with one goal each coming from Morquecho, Tovar, Gonzalez, Jenna Handali, and Lily Graham. The Gaels scored ten goals on 28 shots and assisted six of them. They drew six Saint Francis kick outs, Trujillo improved to 24-1 on swim-offs this season.

Lily Morris picked up the win playing all 32 minutes, she faced 24 shots while making nine saves and leading the team with four steals. The rest of the Gaels added nine more steals and were kicked out six times.

UP NEXT

Iona comes back to action in ten days on March 28 as they make the annual west coast trip. The Maroon & Gold will be opening the trip against Chapman in Orange, CA.
