ORANGE, CA - Iona women's water polo started the 2024 west coast trip with a bang, almost shutting out the Panthers. Lily Morris and the Iona defense kept the home team off the board until 4:34 left in the game. Iona's offense was led by
Kaya Hart with four goals and freshman
Kaitlyn Williams scoring three goals on three shots.
Other goals from the Maroon & Gold came from
Isabella Adams (2),
Remy Ickes (2), and one each from
Sadie Sallas,
Addison Collins, and
Bella Morquecho. Gaels shot 53.8% on 26 shots and drew 10 Chapman exclusions. On defense the Gaels were kicked out 13 times and also recorded 13 steals. In her dominant performance Morris made 13 saves allowing one goal for a 92.3% save percentage, the senior added two steals as well.
Iona started slow on the offensive end of the pool to start the game, only scoring once in the opening quarter, but the defense started the game strong and didn't miss a beat the rest of the 24 minutes. Gaels extended their lead to five going into the half time break before exploding for eight goals in the third. Each team netted one goal in the final eight minutes for a final of 14-1. Sophomore Lola Trujillo was once again impressive on swim-offs improving her record to 30-1 on the season.
