Saint Peter's Tops Iona MBB, 59-53

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona University men's basketball team dropped a 59-53 decision to Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at the Hynes Center Sunday afternoon. The Gaels struggled to solve the Peacocks defense in both halves in a season-low scoring effort.

THE RUNDOWN

Both teams tightened the defensive strings as the two teams combined for a 4-for-27 shooting effort over the first 11 minutes. Saint Peter's led 14-11 with 5:46 left in the frame. The visitors scored five straight points to stretch their advantage to more than two possessions for the first time in the game and led by eight. The Peacocks' largest lead was nine with 2:37 left. Iona scored eight of the final 11 points and trailed by four at the break.

Iona cut it to 28-26 at 17:26 following back-to-back buckets by freshman Jeremiah Quigley and graduate Idan Tretout. Saint Peter's scored eight straight over a nearly four minute span to gain its first double-digit lead with 13:54 to play. With 3:08 remaining, Saint Peter's led 51-39 following Marcus Randolph's fourth three-pointer of the contest. It was the final field goal of the game for the visitors who went 8-for-8 from the charity stripe the rest of the play. Iona cut it to four with 29 seconds left and caused a turnover, creating an opportunity to make it a one possession game but could not get any closer.
