LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona University men's basketball team erased a 14-point first half deficit but could not overcome Rider in a 78-75 loss in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play at Alumni Gymnasium. Graduate
Idan Tretout posted 20 points and classmate
Wheza Panzo had 15 and rookie
Jeremiah Quigley had 13 in the loss.
THE RUNDOWN
Rider jumped on Iona early, taking a 19-6 lead after six minutes of play. After scoring the first seven points, the Gaels got back within a point on three-pointers by Panzo and Tretout. The Broncs ripped off 12 in a row and led by at least nine points the remainder of the half. The home team's largest advantage came with 1:40 remaining on a Mervin James' trifecta that made the score 38-24. It was one of two Rider field goals over the final six and a half minutes as it shot 8-for-8 from the free throw line down the stretch and led by 12 at the break.
Â
As quickly as it fell behind in the first half, Iona evened the score and took a lead in quicker fashion with a 17-2 run over a 3:17 span to begin the frame. Panzo connected on two three pointers, freshman
Sultan Adewale and graduate
Joel Brown each had two layups and Quigley and Tretout converted from the charity stripe during the run. Adewale tied it up with his first bucket during the run with 17:02 left. On the Gaels' next possession, Adewale tipped in a free throw miss to give Iona a 46-43 lead. The Broncs answered, however, with 12 straight points and earned a 55-46 lead with 11:34 remaining. After converting six of their first 10 field goal attempts, the Gaels missed seven in a row during the Broncs' run. The pendulum swung back and forth over the next seven minutes as an 8-0 Iona run was answered with eight straight by Rider, followed by six more for the Gaels and then six for the Broncs. Rider led 69-60 with 4:29 to play. It remained a nine-point game just over two minutes later before Iona would score eight of the next 10 points to get within three with 61 ticks left. After a 1-for-2 free throw conversion by the home team, Tretout banked in a three from the wing with less than 12 seconds left to make it a 76-75 game. Iona quickly fouled and Ruben Rodriguez hit both ensuing free throws to make it 78-75. Rider fouled up three to put Iona to the line. The Gaels got the offensive rebound on a missed free throw and a game-tying three-point attempt fell short as time expired. Much like the first half, the Broncs had just two field goals in the final five plus minutes but made nine free throws to hold off the Gaels.
