FARMVILLE, Va.— The Iona University baseball team held a 6-4 lead through seven innings of play before Longwood erupted for a late rally in the bottom of the eighth inning to take the series opener, 15-8 on Friday night.
Sophomore
Anthony Zollo led the Gaels offense with three hits on the night. Junior
Jayson Gonzalez and graduate student
Garret Gray both recorded two hits each. Junior starter
Andrelys Payamps fanned eight batters in four innings of work.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona got going in the top of the third as junior
Carson Cahoy worked a full count walk to lead things off. After a strikeout, Zollo stepped up to the plate and delivered a single to right field as Cahoy advanced to third. A wild pitch gave the Gaels the 1-0 lead as Cahoy scored on the errant pitch. Iona had two runners on with two outs but a flyout to center ended the frame.
It was Cahoy once again giving the Maroon & Gold momentum as he led off the fifth inning with a hit by pitch and then stole second base. A flyout gave the Lancers one out in the inning. Zollo then roped a 2-1 pitch into left field for a double and driving in Cahoy to jump ahead, 2-0. Longwood picked up out number two before Gonzalez delivered an RBI double for the 3-0 lead.
Payamps ended the night after four innings on the bump, surrendering just three hits and three walks and fanning eight batters.
Longwood got on the board with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI sacrifice fly. The Lancers then loaded up the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, utilizing a wild pitch and hit by pitch to plate a pair of runs and tie the game at 3-3. A sacrifice fly with one-out game the home team a 4-3 advantage before Iona closed out the inning on a strikeout.
The top of the order for the Gaels in Zollo and sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale tallied a one-out walk and single in the top of the seventh. Gonzalez plated Zollo on an RBI single to center field to tie things back up. An RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI single to right field by Gray followed to give Iona a 6-4 lead.
Longwood's offense erupted for 11 runs on six hits in the bottom of the eighth inning to grab full control of the game. The Gaels grabbed two runs in the top of the ninth on a wild pitch and an error to bring the final score to 15-8.
