CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The Iona University softball team opened play at the Eagle Round Robin on Saturday with a 2-0 loss to Holy Cross and were no-hit by host, Boston College in a 3-0 decision for the second game.
GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 2, IONA 0
The Crusaders scored the only two runs of the game on a two-run home run with one-out in the bottom of the first inning.
Iona threatened in the top of the second with runners on second and third with two outs, but Holy Cross got a pop up to third to escape the inning.
The Gaels were held to just one hit through the first four innings of play. Freshman
Madison Campeau opened the fifth inning with a single through the left side. After a pop-up senior
Emma Capuano then singled up the middle to give Iona two runners on. Senior
Kayla Haywood added another single up the middle in the next at-bat. Campeau was thrown out at the plate on the play as Iona looked to get on the scoreboard. With two runners on and two outs Holy Cross ended the frame on a strikeout.
Iona was retired in order in the final two innings as Holy Cross took the opening matchup. Haywood led the Gaels with two hits. Senior
Alyssa DeJianne pitched six innings, surrendering two runs on three hits with two strikeouts.
GAME TWO: BOSTON COLLEGE 3, IONA 0
Boston College recorded one run in the first on a single through the left side. The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the second on two-out RBI single through the left side and an RBI walk for the 3-0 advantage.
The Gaels were held to just three baserunners for the game, a leadoff walk by senior
Jamie Sheeran in the second inning and freshman
Leah Palmer and sophomore
Brooke Acker reaching on errors as the Eagles secured the no-hitter.

The Gaels meet both teams tomorrow in the weekend tomorrow. First up is a matchup against Holy Cross at 11 a.m. before the finale against Boston College at 1:30 p.m. at Harrington Athletics Village.
