Iona Softball Falls to Holy Cross, Boston College on Sunday

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — The Iona University softball team fell to Holy Cross and Boston College to end the weekend at the Eagle Round Robin on Sunday. The Gaels dropped a 4-2 decision to the Crusaders before a 9-1 defeat to the Eagles in five innings for the finale.

GAME ONE: HOLY CROSS 4, IONA 2

Holy Cross broke the scoring open in the top of the first on a two-run single through the right side for the 2-0 advantage.

Senior Kayla Haywood picked up a two-out single in the bottom of the third for the Gaels. Sophomore Brooke Acker followed with a single to right as Haywood advanced all the way to third base. Senior Jamie Sheeran drove in the first Iona run on a single through the left side to cut the deficit to one.

The Crusaders pushed the lead back to two with a run in the fourth and added another in the fifth to take a 4-1 advantage.

Iona looked to get back on the scoreboard in the sixth with runners on the corners with two outs, but Holy Cross got a fielder's choice out at second to end the frame.

The Gaels added another run in the bottom of the seventh as Sheeran recorded a single through the left side to cut the deficit back to two. A walk loaded the bases but a flyout to left ended the late rally opportunity and sealed the game for Holy Cross.

Sheeran led Iona with three hits in game one. Acker and Haywood added two hits apiece. Sophomore Maddy Lowry gave up just two hits and struck out two batters in three scoreless innings of relief for the Gaels.

GAME TWO: BOSTON COLLEGE  9, IONA 1 (5 inn.)

Boston College broke open the scoring in the first inning on an RBI single to left field and a two-run triple through the right side for the early lead.

The Eagles added to the total with a three-run home run in the second and a two-run home run in the third to push the lead to 8-0.

Iona scored its lone run of the contest on a two-out single down the left field line by senior Kaylin Flukey in the fourth inning.

Boston College capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the fourth inning.
