STATEN ISLAND, NY — The Iona University baseball team battled to the final out on Tuesday afternoon but ultimately fell to Wagner, 8-7 at SIUH Community Park.

Jim Pasquale led the Maroon & Gold with a 2-for-3 afternoon at the plate, driving in three on a fifth inning home run. Graduate student

Carl Kuentzel both logged three scoreless innings of relief.
GAME SUMMARY
Iona looked to threaten early with runners on second and third with two outs, but the home team escaped the inning on a fly out to right field.
Wagner opened the bottom of the first by loading the bases on a single and pair of walks. The Seahawks tacked on five runs in the inning on an RBI groundout, a two-run double and back-to-back RBI singles for the 5-0 favor.

Nick Forney led off the second with a walk for the Gaels. Pasquale added a one-out single to left field. Sophomore
Nickolas Mora connected on a single through the right side for the first run. Sophomore
Anthony Zollo was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Iona. Junior
Jayson Gonzalez tacked on the second run with another hit by pitch. After a pitching change, Wagner ended the threat on a groundout to the pitcher.
The Seahawks looked to add to the lead in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded with two outs. Kuentzel got a flyout to left field to end the frame for the Gaels.
Iona got two runners on in the fifth as freshman
Carter Groen reached on a fielder's choice and advanced all the way to third on a single by junior
Anthony Febo. Forney picked up an RBI groundout to third to drive in the first run of the inning.
Kyle McSorley earned a walk to put two runners on base. Pasquale stepped to the plate and launched a three-run shot to right field to give the Gaels a 6-5 lead.
Scoring slowed till the bottom half of the eighth as Wagner advanced the tying run to third with one out. A single through the right side knotted up the game. The Seahawks tacked on two more in the frame on an RBI single to center field and a sacrifice fly to take an 8-6 lead.
Looking for one last rally, freshman JC Frias led off the ninth inning with a hit by pitch followed by a single to left field from sophomore
Josiah Ragsdale for the Gaels. Gonzalez then connected on a double to right center, Wagner got the out at the plate as Frias attempted to score on the play. Junior
Matt Wessels then delivered an RBI infield single to shortstop to make it a one run game. The tying run moved to third on a walk by Febo. Wagner recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end trouble and secure the 8-7 win.
NOTABLE NUGGETS
- The two through six spots in the Iona order all recorded a base knock.
- Pasquale posted his second straight two-hit game for the Gaels. The fifth inning shot was the sixth home run of his Iona career.
- Kuentzel logged his second straight scoreless relief outing, surrendering just two hits in three innings of work.
- Torrado threw a season-high three innings in his relief appearance. He gave up two hits and a walk while striking out one batter in his first scoreless outing of the season.
